Diagnostics
The physical exam, which is the cornerstone of our PetCare+ program, is only the first step in maintaining your pet's health or improving the quality of its life. The next step, diagnostic testing and procedures, is critical for the early detection of diseases. Early detection of health problems allows us to offer options for the treatment of your pet's illness at a time when the treatments are most likely to be successful.
We highly recommend the use of screening tests in all healthy pets, young and old. We are continually amazed by the types and numbers of diseases that we have been able to identify in apparently healthy dogs and cats of all ages through the use of these simple blood and urine tests. The vast majority of these diseases and conditions can be cured or treated, allowing for a longer and improved quality of life for these pets. Some new tests (e.g. the ERD® test for kidney disease) have given us opportunities to treat diseases that, in the past, we could only watch as they progressed.
Listed below are the types of diagnostics that we use at the ACLA or have available to us through referral veterinary laboratories and hospitals. The Screening Diagnostics list highlights the common tests that are used to screen for diseases. The Advanced Diagnostic list identifies those procedures often used to pinpoint and clarify abnormalities identified from other testing. The Specialty Diagnostics list contains those diagnostic tools that are available at referral centers. Please select any of the diagnostic tests listed below for a more detailed explanation of how the test is useful in diagnosing diseases and abnormalities and when it would be recommended.
